Hi there!! Welcome to my Siberian Page. My name is Serge and I have gathered a collection of pictures about Irkutsk, and the region of Lake Baikal. These pictures were collected from various sites on the Internet. I have built these pages because I was in Siberia in September of 1999 and June 2000. I love Siberia and especially the area of Irkutsk and Lake Baikal. I hope you will enjoy these pictures as much as I do. I will add new pages as I have spare time and whenever I will find new pictures. I will eventually add those pictures that I have made when I was in Irkutsk, and Lake Baikal. If you have problems with this site, or find broken links, please inform me as soon as possible so that I may correct any inconsistencies. Come often to see what changes have occurred since your last visit. 8-)

Irkutsk is about 300 years old and was
founded in the 17th century as a trading post. Under the czars all exiles were sent to Irkutsk. The 18th century buildings and wooden houses, which are so characteristic of Irkutsk today, were built and lived in by the Decembrists. The Decembrists were a group of revolutionary officers who were exiled to Irkutsk after their activities led to an uprising against Czar Nicholas I in December 1825. With the discovery of gold in the 19th century Irkutsk quickly grew and is now a buzzing, cosmopolitan city with a population of 650,000 (and, while were on statistics, 4 night clubs, 5 theatres, 15 cinemas, 34 libraries containing 2.5 million books, 36 institutes and colleges and apparently 166,646 pupils who go to school every day.) Can you locate Irkutsk and Lake Baikal? 8-)
